The Tom Mustapic Memorial Golf Tournament

October 19, 2022

On September 9, the family of the late Tom Mustapic presented George Jeffrey Children's Foundation with a cheque for $3,000. This donation was made in memory of Tom who was diagnosed with ALS in early 2019 and sadly passed away in December 2020.

Tom was an active and a very well-respected member of the Thunder Bay community. He was an avid golfer and after his passing, his sons and their friends organized a golf tournament to raise donations for ALS and other charities that supported Tom throughout his illness.

Finishing its second year, the annual tournament, held at Whitewater Golf Course, has been a great success raising, close to $50,000 for various charities thanks to the many generous tournament sponsors and participants.

Tom's wife Cindy said "Because of ALS, Tom lost his ability to speak but he was fortunate and grateful that the team at George Jeffrey were able to provide technology that enabled him to communicate with us by using a sensor on his forehead enhancing his quality of life. During his care through George Jeffrey Children's Centre's Augmentative Communication Program, Tom was shown a great deal of dignity and respect and this donation is made to show our family's appreciation."

She also said "Not many people know, but George Jeffrey Children's Centre's Augmentative Communication Program is the only program that supports clients from birth to end of life and the program often supportsthose with an ALS diagnosis." She further adds "Clinicians in the Augmentative Communication Program can also record their clients' voices in-case they lose they their ability to speak allowing, their communication device to literally become their voice, which is amazing."
